About Us
RWTO Lydia Snow Branch Brochure 2018-2019
Lydia Snow grew up in Ballinafad. After graduating from Toronto Normal School in 1937, Lydia taught for fourteen years in rural one-room schools, before becoming the itinerate Home Economics teacher for Nassagaweya Township. Lydia then taught Home Economics in Burlington until her retirement from Tecumseh in 1975. Lydia served as local president of FWTAO, and for her many OASWT/RWTO contributions she received honourary membership.
In February, 1999, at the North Halton Social Pot Luck, Lydia inquired if anyone would be interested in forming a new branch in North Halton. Twelve people agreed to help. Sadly, Lydia passed away on October 1, 1999, before the new RWTO group could be formed. Later, Joanne Mackie provided leadership in forming the North Halton Branch. The by-laws were based on those in the provincial handbook. The mission statement is a simplified version of the province’s mission statement. The charter group voted to have this North Halton branch named after Lydia, since she was instrumental in establishing the new group.
The Lydia Snow group was officially formed in December 1999, with appropriate provincial dignitaries in attendance. The branch adopted the colour purple, because in the Bible Lydia is a seller of purple cloth. The Lydia Snow branch was the first RWTO group to create a brochure that outlines the yearly plan and provides a communication link for members.
Please join us in caring, sharing,
and having fun.
Lydia Snow North Halton RWTO holds 10 meetings between September and June. These include a five branch Area 12 gathering called PENTA and a wonderful Christmas banquet. Meetings are held in various locations throughout North Halton. The place of our meeting is clearly indicated in our brochure which can be accessed on this branch site. As well, more information is posted on our monthly updates. Some of our meetings are luncheons and some are coffee meetings. Members are welcome to attend a lunch meeting for the meeting part only at no cost. We begin each meeting at 9:30 with coffee and goodies. All meetings begin at 9:30 with coffee and social time, followed by a short business meeting at 10:00 AM. Every meeting includes a speaker or some other form of entertainment. Topics include health and wellness, travel, the arts, local history, musical performances, or performances by local school groups.
The Lydia Snow North Halton Branch is also active in giving support to our local community. We provide Christmas Gifts to teenagers and women who are assisted by Halton women’s Place (Milton site). As well, each year we assist an organization within the community that supports the needs of women, children and men with a substantial donation from our fund raising. We also provide funds to purchase several bedkits each year for Sleeping Children Around the World from our loose change collection.
Annual membership for the Lydia Snow North Halton Branch is $60.00. Retired women teachers are eligible to join at any time through the year and are welcome to attend a free meeting to check us out. Additional information can be obtained by contacting our Past President/Membership Convenor as listed at the top of the page. We know you will find the members of Lydia Snow North Halton to be welcoming and caring and the topics interesting and entertaining. We hope you will consider coming to one of our meetings and discover a whole new potential for lasting friendships.
