Tales and Tunes for Tots continues to be our main community outreach project. We also make donations to the local foodbank, collect used glasses to send to third world countries and many of our members are active volunteers at the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital (working in patient care, the coffee shop, the information kiosk and in the mammography and bone density clinics).
Tales and Tunes for Tots
The main charity Napanee Branch supports, Tales and Tunes for Tots, was begun in 2005 with a 500 dollar grant from Provincial office for a community outreach project. At the time, the objective was to donate a children’s book to each baby born in Lennox & Addington County General Hospital and the project was called ‘Books For Babies’.
However, before the project began, it was announced that the maternity ward at the hospital was closing and all expectant mothers would now be directed to Kingston General Hospital. Undaunted, the local health unit was contacted and the nurses there graciously agreed to deliver the books when they visited newborns in the Napanee area. Lennox & Addington Resources for Children was also contacted and they generously donated some early literacy pamphlets and some CD’s of music they had left over from a previous project. Hence ‘Tales and Tunes For Tots’ was born.
Since that humble beginning we have been fortunate to receive additional funding from RTO (Retired Teachers of Ontario), Napanee Community Foundation, local Women’s Institutes, some personal donations and a huge grant from The Trillium Foundation, which was part of a larger grant applied for by Lennox&Addington Resources For Children. With this grant, we were able to extend our area to include all of Lennox and Addington. Since 2005, Napanee Branch has provided 1233 early literacy kits to the newborns of L&A County and our members have donated over 140 volunteer hours preparing these kits.
