Ontario Volunteer Service Awards 2020
The Jean Axcell Award is presented annually to a member of the Peterborough Branch of the Retired Women Teachers of Ontario for outstanding service to our branch in many areas and over many years.
This year’s (2019) worthy recipient was Marilyn Challice.
Criteria for Cora Bailey Award Recipients
The Cora Bailey Award may be presented to a Branch member who has contributed outstanding service to her Branch.
The Cora Bailey Award: Cora Bailey from the Peterborough Branch was RWTO/OERO’s first Executive Secretary-Treasurer. She held this position for eleven years until 1982 and wrote the History Book – OASWT 1956-1976. Beginning in 2003, this award was presented in her honour.
The Cora Bailey Award for the year 2019 was presented in May to Marion Philp.
The Peterborough Branch of RWTO is continuing to support various organizations in the community thanks to everyone’s generosity. This year we will give donations to Crossroads, Cameron House, Salvation Army, YES and Kawartha Food Banks.
In September, we collected school supplies, single sheets, towels, washcloths, unscented shampoo, slippers, cash and gift cards to support Crossroads.
We will be collecting children and teen-age books to distribute at Christmas through the Salvation Army at the meeting in November. During the same meeting we will be collecting handbags and toiletries as well as clothing for Cameron House.
This year we have found a need for milk bag mats in Peterborough so we will be distributing some of the mats to One City to support those who are living outdoors.
We recently were able to collect these donations along with $50 in gift cards and $40 in cash for the Crossroads shelter in Peterborough which provides safe shelter, resources, support and crisis services for women who experience violence and abuse of any kind.

Theresa Mary (Courtney) Cornack April 17, 1951 – November 1, 2020
It was an honour to have known and worked with her. Theresa was a very valued member of our branch of R. W. T. O. Her knowledge of both social work and teaching made her an ideal person to co-ordinate these two professions in her position as our Outreach Co-ordinator. Her main interest was working with Crossroads Peterborough, helping provide funds for Nutrition Programmes for both children and mothers and also needed school supplies and other necessities.
Theresa was also active in the Merry Mattress Makers group which makes mats out of milk bags to be delivered to 3rd World countries and used for both adult and children’s beds.
