At our April meeting, Michelle Robbins, curator of Buxton National Historic Site and Museum, and Maxine Robbins told the very interesting story of Mary Ann Shadd Cary. This lady was an anti-slavery activist, journalist, teacher, lawyer, the first female publisher in Canada and the first black female publisher in North America. Many years ago, Maxine and her husband found important historic papers in an old house on their property which led to further study and learning about Mrs. Cary. In February 2024 a stamp for Mary Ann Shadd Cary was introduced.
