Evelyn Kemp was born and raised in what is now Thunder Bay. Evelyn graduated from the Toronto Teachers’ College with qualifications to teach Primary, Junior, and Intermediate elementary courses. During her career, Evelyn acquired further qualification in Media, Physical and Health Education, Special Education, Music (Vocal), and Librarianship.
Evelyn began her career teaching primary school in Thunder Bay. Two years later, she moved to accept a job to teach Grade Two with the Niagara Falls School Board. Excited to begin, she arrived with a trunk full of primary materials, only to learn that she would be teaching not Grade Two but a Grade Six class at Valley Way Public School. Determined to do her best, Evelyn adapted quickly and carried on. While at Valley Way, Evelyn helped to set up the library. She soon became a travelling librarian to Niagara Falls schools, spending a day in each one. Teachers had begun to receive prep time, so having a librarian available made scheduling easier for principals. When Evelyn retired in 1990, she had been the librarian in five different schools.
During her career, Evelyn enjoyed curling with teaching colleagues. In retirement, she travelled with her husband, and in later years she wintered in Florida with other retired teachers.
Evelyn joined the Niagara Falls branch of RWTO/OERO in October 2002. For many years, Evelyn has served faithfully as a caller. In this capacity, she reaches out to members with information about upcoming luncheon meetings and submits the prospective number of attendees to our Social Convenor. Members appreciate her friendly, welcoming phone calls, and our Social Convenor appreciates her trusted help. As well, for many years, both past and present branch Treasurers have depended on Evelyn to audit the branch financial statement for the fiscal year. Evelyn continues to be a valued member of our Niagara Falls branch and is highly worthy of this award.
Provincial President Sandra Salerno presented Evelyn with her award at our branch Spring Luncheon on April 10, 2024.
