On April 8, our Niagara Falls branch enjoyed a wonderful High Tea at Betty’s Restaurant. All the sandwiches, dessert squares, and fruit were delicious — a fine repast fitting the 70th anniversary not only of RWTO/OERO but of our branch. Member Stephanie Nielsen brought copies of her books to sell; she’ll donate all proceeds to Birchway Niagara. Stephanie informed us that she’s been asked to write another Niagara book that will include short biographies of notable Niagara Region residents. No doubt it will be a fine addition to her already impressive publications. Member Marilyn Demers’ mother kindly donated lovely tea cups that members were welcome to use and take home as a memento.
To make the event even more special, member Rita DeLuca Gates read a congratulatory message from her husband, MPP Wayne Gates. Rita provided a printed copy in a beautiful folder. As well, Niagara Falls mayor Jim Diodati dropped by to present us with a Certificate of Recognition and to share memories of memorable teachers. We’ll make sure that these gifts are saved in the RWTO/OERO Provincial archives. Our own members shared stories of their memorable teaching experiences. It was a wonderful way for all of us to learn more about each other as professional educators.
To top off our 70th Anniversary celebration, on April 9, from 10:15 pm to 10:30 pm, Niagara Parks illuminated the Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls in blue. The event was broadcast on Niagara Parks’ live web cam.
We look forward to the continuing success of RWTO/OERO and our 75th Anniversary celebration.
